I remember the composing room of the 30s and 40s on the first floor, at the north end of the press room. The composing room was moved to the third floor, over the mail room and loading dock right after WWII.
 
I believe the third operator on the left is Bill Harris and the second on the right is Bill Scheffler. On the right, in the back, is the copy desk. The pipes descending from the ceiling carried copy from the editorial office. On the left, beyond the pillars was the ad row.
 
Note the flooring material. It was composed of wooden blocks.
